DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone is the most abundant natural steroidal hormone in humans, where is is synthesized by the gonads, brain and adrenal glands. This important steroidal hormone, which is involved in the biosynthesis of critical androgens and sex hormones, is also known as:
As we age, our natural levels of DHEA begin to decline, and it is not provided in sufficient amounts in our diets. While exercise and calorie restriction has been shown to boost DHEA levels, there is little we can do as age pulls us down from baseline levels. It is thought that supplementing with DHEA can boost our natural levels and the hormones DHEA acts as an intermediate for, thereby improving overall health and metabolic function.
Dosage: 25mg daily with food.
How does DHEA Work?
The primary action of DHEA is to act as an intermediate precursor to more powerful androgens like DHT and testosterone, although it can directly activate both androgen and estrogen receptors. DHEAs direct activity is somewhat limited, as it cannot similarly bind to glucocorticoid, progesterone or mineralocorticoid receptors.
It is possible that DHEA may play many more roles in the body than simply that of a precursor; it has also been shown to activate NMDA, GABAA and PPARα receptors, as well as regulate proteins essential for the biosynthesis of glucocorticoids such as cortisol. As we age and our levels decline, there are multiple facets of the human metabolic machine that serve to be potential victims of a deficiency.
